Shield Advanced Solutions, providers of High Availability software, announces a new release for DR4i (Disaster Recovery for the IBM i). This premier Disaster Recovery tool for the IBM i now incorporates the latest available technology for apply journal data. Based on the leading High Availability solution HA4i, DR4i now provides customers with the option to decide which apply process to use. Shield's customers like the fact that they only need to install a license of the product on a single system, which reduces cost and complexity.

New in this release: DR4i V8R1

  • Re-write of the code base, for better control
  • New apply process
  • Improved install process

"The web-based interface allows DR4i to be controlled entirely using a secure IBM i sign on," said Chris Hird, president of Shield Advanced Solutions. "The increased functionality and automation has not diminished the product's reputation for simple installation and configuration, and ease-of-use. DR4i supports the most complex to the simplest application recovery environment with minimal system overhead."

Technical

DR4i requires IBM i OS Version 5, release 4 and upwards and uses remote journaling for database replication. This release adds a new apply process for the user journal entries which is faster and more effective in complex environments, the existing apply process is still available for customers who prefer it. The new PHP interface brings a modern approach to controlling the DR environment which also reduces the management burden associated with all DR solutions.

Licensing is IBM tier-based.

Background

DR4i is based on Shield's RAP (Receiver Apply Program) but only uses the Remote Journal apply process which includes the technology pioneered by Shield's Chris Hird for applying remote journal receivers using the APYJRNCHG command. Says Hird, "New features and enhancements have taken the product beyond its original concepts. While the original apply technology still survives in the product, it has been supplemented by a totally new apply process which removed many restrictions. Many customers enjoy the additional benefits brought by using Shield's replication method. We are pleased, however to continue to offer our customers a choice in this direction."
