System i Developer today announces that the next RPG & DB2 Summit will take place March 21-23, 2017 at the Embassy Suites Orlando Lake Buena Vista South in Florida.

Hosted by Susan Gantner, Jon Paris and Paul Tuohy, the Summit focuses on modern tips and techniques that can be used immediately by IBM i developers and database engineers to improve their applications.

Patrick Weaver, Programming Manager at a Fortune 500 financial technology company, has attended six Summits over the past 10 years. According to Weaver, each event inspires him with new and different ways to modernize his IBM i applications, and he walks away with the knowledge to implement those improvements.

"After the last Summit, I tackled an RPG program that was using the old standard Op code READS, reading about 6 tables from beginning to end with a total of about 164.5 million rows. This program was running in about an hour and 24 minutes. I rewrote the program using embedded SQL and now the program runs in 3 minutes and 45 seconds. So this stuff they’re teaching works OK, don’t you think?”

Weaver considers the RPG & DB2 Summit his primary source of development education because “no other event brings this much development knowledge to the table.”

Åke Olsson has made the trip from Sweden to the U.S. six times since 2009 to attend Summit events.

“The Summit is like the Powdermilk Biscuits on A Prairie Home Companion. It ‘gives shy persons the strength to get up and do what needs to be done.’

“For me, that meant giving me the confidence to try new techniques, to propose major changes, and eventually to publish articles and books and to speak at conferences. It helped me perform 'beyond expectations' in the eyes of my colleagues and customers…and myself.”

Previously a Senior Consultant at PDB DataSystem AB and now Proprietor at Åke Olsson IT Konsult, Olsson also credits the Summit with creating an environment that helps people build their network of technical peers.

“The aggregated knowledge and camaraderie at the Summit makes the difference. The speakers and others who you initially just greet at breakfast can end up being your life line. Knowing they are there gives that extra bit of confidence to try new ways of doing ‘what needs to be done.’"

In addition to the three-day conference, an optional fourth day of hands-on workshops on March 20, 2017 provides an intensive dive into one of four vital technology areas — SQL, RSE/RDi, Service Programs or PHP.

Online registration for the RPG & DB2 Summit can be accessed via the System i Developer website. The early bird registration rate of $1,295 is in effect through February 17, 2017.
