The previously announced IBM PowerVM, which delivers industrial-strength virtualization for IBM AIX, IBM i, and Linux environments on IBM POWER processor-based systems, has been enhanced with the following:

  • Shared Storage Pools now allow up to 16 systems to share a common pool of preallocated storage. Shared Storage Pools are able      to provide quick provisioning and efficient storage utilization for virtualized IBM Power Systems™ workloads. Shared Storage Pools technology can simplify server and storage administration, reduce SAN infrastructure, and provide a framework that allows for easier movement of live workloads  across Power® frames.
  • New VIOS Performance Advisor analyzes VIOS performance and makes recommendations for performance optimization.
  • PowerVM has the following new advanced features enabled by VMControl that accelerate VM deployment, optimize storage      utilization, and improve availability through automation: 1) Linked clones allow for sharing of VM images, which greatly accelerates VM deployment and reduces the storage usage. 2)System pool management for IBM i  workloads provides increased flexibility and resource utilization

  • PowerVM will now support 20 VMs per core, which  doubles the number of VMs supported per core. Customer value includes      improved density and server consolidation.
  • Usability improvements include the following: 1) Improved  console usability now automatically issues appropriate VIOS commands      during Dynamic LPAR changes initiated from the HMC. This reduces the  complexity and time to complete a dynamic change to a VM. 2) Improved VIOS setup, tuning, and validation using the Runtime Expert.
  • Live Partition Mobility (LPM) improvements include: 1) IBM PowerVM and the Hardware Management Console now support up to 16      concurrent LPM activities. Improvements in single-session LPM performance can accelerate mobility for a single session by up to 3X over previous releases. 2) Improved control for Live Partition Mobility NPIV configurations,  which allows specification of the destination Fibre Channel port. This  allows the desired Fibre Channel port to be used automatically once the partition mobility completes.
