IBM WebSphere Application Server Liberty profile V8.5.5 is a lightweight, composable, fast-starting platform that is optimized for modern application workloads, such as cloud and mobile. It is designed for high-scale and resilient production deployments to provide enhanced developer productivity and to integrate easily into modern DevOps workflows. WebSphere Application Server Liberty profile previously delivered the Java EE 7 Web Profile and Java EE 7 Full Platform certified environment and additional resiliency features through the continuous delivery model. The new features provide enhancements that include programming model support for real-time-communications including Real-Time Communications engine (WebRTC) and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Servlets, security enhancements, resiliency features, and additional cloud deployment flexibility for Java workloads.

Enhancements to WebSphere Application Server Liberty profile include:

  • Support for Real-Time Communications by using WebRTC and SIP Servlets. WebRTC is an emerging standard that enhances the customer experience by enabling client applications with rich multimedia capabilities, such as voice calling, video chat, and presence by using HTML 5 without the need for browser plugins. Support for SIP Servlets makes it possible to programmatically manage IP multimedia sessions for applications, such as IP telephony, presence, and instant messaging.
  • Health Management feature to intelligently manage and monitor health conditions of application servers, proactively respond by taking corrective actions and isolate applications and application servers for ease of problem determination and resolution
  • Enhanced WebSphere Liberty elasticity feature that enhances autonomic scale out capability by deploying new application server instances when the existing provisioned servers are insufficient to meet demands.
  • Server maintenance mode that helps to control planned server outages by allowing servers to be marked as unavailable for new work without disrupting services and routing traffic to alternate servers.
  • Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) that provides Web Single Sign-On (SSO) feature.
