Proper use of SQL is key to releasing the value of IBM DB2 for i.

System i Developer, organizers of the popular RPG & DB2 Summit, has opened registration for SQL for i Spotlight, a new hands-on technical conference targeted to IBM i developers, database engineers and software providers working with the integrated database known as IBM DB2 for i. Scheduled for June 5-8 at the IBM Innovation Center in Waltham, MA, SQL for i Spotlight focuses on the SQL skills needed to modernize IBM i-centric reporting and data access, enable business intelligence, enforce data integrity, enhance database functionality and improve performance.

Mike Cain, senior technical staff member at IBM’s DB2 for i Center of Excellence, points out that SQL is the industry-standard interface to communicate effectively with a relational database management system.

"To get the most of out of DB2 for i, and to realize more value with less effort, the proper use of SQL is key," says Cain. "Whether you are new to IBM i or have 20 years’ experience with the platform, acquiring current knowledge of DB2 and learning new data-centric techniques is a critical success factor. The 2012 SQL for i Spotlight event is a fantastic opportunity to achieve this."

System i Developer worked with Cain and IBM database expert Kent Milligan to develop a conference curriculum suitable for advanced SQL users as well as beginners. Attendees can further customize the level and length of their Spotlight education by selecting from two optional full-day hands-on workshops.

For IT professionals who do not use SQL on a daily basis, the Spotlight event begins on Tuesday, June 5 with an full-day workshop entitled: Foundations in SQL for i–Hands-On. This optional refresher/introductory workshop, taught by Susan Gantner and Skip Marchesani, covers the basic and early-intermediate SQL topics needed to get the most out of the following two-day conference.

The main Spotlight conference runs from Wednesday, June 6, through Thursday, June 7, with two tracks of practical, in-depth classroom sessions taught by Cain, Milligan, Marchesani and Paul Tuohy. The sessions cover four primary “must-know” areas for IBM i professionals: SQL programming, IBM DB2 for i capabilities, performance optimization and query, reporting and business intelligence enablement.

On Friday, June 8, Milligan will lead an optional, hands-on lab focused specifically on mastering the DB2 for i Performance Tools.

SQL for i Spotlight is sponsored by two leading media organizations as well as IBM i database modernization and modeling pioneer, Resolution Xcase.

Registration rates start at $1,195 for the core conference ($995 for System i Developer alumni) and $395 per workshop. Registration includes a conference workbook containing handouts for all of the sessions, plus breakfast and lunch each day registered.
