System i Developer, the consortium of top IBM i educators and producers of the RPG & DB2 Summit, today announces availability of the latest version of its Favorite Keyboard Shortcuts for RSE, updated to reflect shortcuts introduced or modified in conjunction with RDi 9.5 and earlier releases. The new and changed shortcuts can be used to quickly format Free Form RPG, jump to subroutines or procedures, open members without drilling down in RSE and perform other common tasks. The RSE cheat sheet also contains Playing with Blocks, a series of tips related to working with blocks of code.

Developed by RSE expert Susan Gantner for use in her training courses, the Favorite RSE Keyboard Shortcuts tips sheet and companion RSE Quick Start Guide are freely available to the IBM i community at www.systemideveloper.com/downloads.html. Both documents will also be used in Gantner’s RSE sessions and Hands-On RSE Workshop at the upcoming RPG & DB2 Summit, October 19-22 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Chicago.

“The latest version of RDi makes it really easy to reformat existing Free Form RPG logic,” explains Gantner. "You still need third-party tools to convert from fixed form RPG to free form. But once you're in free form and you need to re-indent some code because you've added or removed a level of nesting, the new built-in RDi support makes that quick and easy to do."

“The other thing I really like is the replacement for the shortcut that let me jump from a subroutine or procedure call directly to the code for that routine and then back again. I was addicted to that! But the new way to "jump around" in V9.5 is much better because we can move down to multiple levels of logic and then back again. It’s surprising how much difference a small change like this makes! I'll just have to remember to use the new shortcuts from now on."

In addition to Gantner’s RSE training, the October RPG & DB2 Summit features courses on RPG IV, free form RPG, embedded SQL, DB2 for i, PHP, Web enablement technologies, Web services, mobile application development and other modern IBM i development techniques.
