System i Developer today announces several new sessions slated for the March 2015 RPG & DB2 Summit at the Embassy Suites Outdoor World in Dallas, TX. The new sessions, many inspired by a recent survey of 1,000 RPG & DB2 Summit alumni, expand Summit offerings to more thoroughly address current issues faced by IBM i development teams.

The RPG & DB2 Summit curriculum traditionally focuses on tackling the most common IBM i development challenges, such as how to build graphical and mobile interfaces, how to modernize legacy code and database techniques, and how to keep development skills up-to-date.

"Our survey pointed to some specific additions to our current curriculum that could help attendees fill in the gaps on important projects," explains Susan Gantner, one of the founding partners of System i Developer. "For example, as the information security landscape becomes more complex, developers are more impacted by —and more responsible for — data security and compliance requirements. We felt we could provide stronger guidance in those areas at the Summit."

Patrick Botz, former Lead Security Architect at IBM, will instruct attendees in three security sessions targeted directly to IBM i developers and database engineers. The sessions will cover PCI compliance; useful security tools for developers such as profile swap APIs, FIELD PROC, ENCRYPT SQL, row column access control, and so on; and the important role that developers play in securing data.

Other sessions newly added to the Summit agenda include:

    • Working with JSON in RPG with Open Source Tools with Scott Klement

    • PHP & RPG Integration Examples with Mike Pavlak

    • Look What You Can Do with RDi with Susan Gantner

    • Development Strategies on Power with Paul Tuohy

    • Fun!(damental) and Fun!(ctional) Table-driven Programming with Ted Holt

    • Handling "The Weird Stuff" in RPG Programs with Paul Tuohy

"Our alumni are looking to us to help them cement modern development habits into place, whether in their tooling or their strategies or their use of newer technologies. The important thing is that they continue to strive for that next level of productivity, and that's exactly what we help them do at the Summit."

Pre-conference workshops on Web Services, SQL, RSE/RDi and PHP will take place Monday, March 16.
