TechTip: 5250 Fonts

General
Typography
  • Smaller Small Medium Big Bigger
  • Default Helvetica Segoe Georgia Times

As a developer in the 5250 environment, I like to keep default colors. Users may change colors to suit their preferences, but for development purposes, I want to see what the screen will look like without user adjustment. I also like to maintain multiple sessions and use appearance to differentiate between them.

In order to maintain the default colors, I have to change the display font to tell what session I am working on. The problem I always immediately encounter is that the menu option to change fonts appears to be grayed out and unavailable for use.

This is a quirk of PCOMM--and an unnecessary quirk at that. You can get around this restriction by changing the size of your session from maximum. Once the size has changed, the font option becomes available. After you change your session fonts, the fonts will be retained when you maximize the session again.

Some of the available fonts do not display all characters at all resolutions, so be sure to test several font options before settling on a preference.
