iSeries Navigator is a functionally rich tool with so many useful features that it is sometimes overwhelming. Some customers enjoy exploring the iSeries Navigator landscape to see what its capabilities are, but many would rather be led to the really good stuff by an experienced user.

Luckily for you, many seasoned iSeries Navigator users (including developers, testers, and user interface designers) have provided you with a set of resources that will provide insight to the very functions you want to use most.

The following are some resources you may find useful, depending on the level of detail you are looking for.

Overview, Concepts, and Broad Strokes

The following resources will give you a general understanding of iSeries Navigator and also lead you to more comprehensive resources once you are ready to dig into the function.

Help Topics in iSeries Navigator--By simply opening iSeries Navigator and clicking on the Help > Help Topics menu, you will see a nice little window that introduces you to iSeries Navigator. The information ranges from describing what's new in each release to showing you what you can do with iSeries Navigator. The way it shows you what you can do with iSeries Navigator is quite useful because it also gets you used to the navigation tree. When you click on the pictures, the Help window displays a summary as well as a list of the types of tasks you can run in that folder. It also gives you a summary of how to use the dialog help and general guidelines on how to best use iSeries Navigator.

iSeries Navigator Web Site--At the iSeries Navigator product site, you will learn overall concepts, but as you dig into this site, you will also find a deep level of detailed information that will help you in your day-to-day tasks.

Introduction to iSeries Navigator Flash Demo--This overview will acquaint you with iSeries Navigator. It's one of those Flash demos that's pretty fun to view, and you learn a lot at the same time. It includes topics like What Is iSeries Navigator, Concepts, Look at Our Growth (a fun view showing each set of functions being added for each release), What's New and Cool (which includes a number of fairly in-depth demos), and Tour the UI. The tour gives you a chance to navigate through the iSeries Navigator function tree and gets you familiar with the types of actions and views you would see in each area.

Comprehensive but Short Bursts of Information

The following links will take you to short, yet detailed resources.

iSeries Navigator FAQs--This site contains many FAQs in categories like Database, Management Central, Work Management, Inventory, Partitioning, File Systems, Wireless, and 16 more.

Demos and Presentations

iSeries Navigator Presentations--These presentations were prepared by developers and designers of the functions you want to use. They contain pictures, samples, and notes to explain detailed concepts.

Demonstrations of iSeries Navigator Functions--These demos describe specific functions. Topics include Managing Multiple Systems, Work Management, Hardware, Database, Network, Security, and more.

Overview of the Database Navigator Functions in Action--Here is another database demo that gives a nice overview of the V5R2 functions.

Information Center Articles--The Information Center offers a rich set of articles on iSeries Navigator. Search for the following: iSeries Navigator, wireless access, navigator tasks, managing fixes, etc.

Real iSeries Expert Contact and Comment--On the iSeries Navigator Web site, there is a link called Comment. If you have a question, concern, suggestion, or education request, or if you like something you see, don't like something you see, or wish you saw a function you don't see, this link lets you send a comment to an iSeries Navigator contact. Responses may not be immediate, so if you have a real service need, go through the support line.

Deep, Ongoing, and Detailed

There are also a few resources that go deep into how to use iSeries Navigator.

iSeries Navigator Redbooks--In V5R1, we released a six-volume set of Redbooks for iSeries Navigator. While we are now shipping V5R3, this set of books is still very valuable and current. It covers overview, security, configuration and service, packaging and products, performance, and networking.

MC Press Online--Of course, MC Press Online has a deep level of content that talks about iSeries and iSeries Navigator. Search on this site, and read on.

Expanding Your Horizons

There are new functions and concepts that you may want to learn about that relate to iSeries Navigator and managing your iSeries or eServer i5 system.

IBM Virtualization Engine Product Web Site--The IBM Virtualization Engine console is one of the systems services in the IBM Virtualization Engine. It provides a browser-based view of iSeries Navigator systems, system groups, monitors, and tasks. If you use iSeries Navigator with IBM Director, have multiple central systems, or have a boss who needs to know the health of the IT environment, then the Virtualization Engine console may be just the ticket.
