As announced in our Q2 2023 ASNA Newsletter, AVR 5.0 has been retired.
AVR 5.0 served us long and well, but everything reaches the end of the road sometime. With Windows 10/11's ever-changing landscape, it's critical that we use the latest C++ compilers to ensure the best fidelity with COM possible. Beyond that, Microsoft ends Visual Studio 2013 (which was used to build AVR 5.0) in three months. AVR 5.2 is an important upgrade.
We strongly recommend you upgrade to either AVR 5.1 or 5.2 as soon as possible. The upgrade from AVR 5.0 to AVR 5.1/5.2 is covered by your maintenance plan.
The upgrade process
The upgrade process from AVR 5.0 to AVR 5.1/5.2 is similar to that of upgrading from AVR 4.x to AVR 5.x (which is explained in detail here. To upgrade to AVR 5.1/5.2 from AVR 5.0:
• |
Download AVR 5.1/5.2 from our downloads page |
• |
Make a backup of all of your AVR 5.0 projects |
• |
Download and install AVR 5.1 or 5.2 developer product (neither will co-coexist with AVR 5.0 or AVR 4.x) |
• |
Open each 5.0 project and recompile it with AVR 5.1/5.2 |
• |
We strongly recommend installing your executables on a test client before doing a full production deployment. |
• |
After testing and installing the AVR 5.1/5.2 runtime on your clients, redeploy your new AVR 5.1/5.2 executables. |
• |
As always, watch for issues with third-party controls. If issues arise with them and AVR 5.1/5.2, you'll need to remove or replace them. |
AVR 5.1/5.2 requires DataGate 16/17 to connect. You may also need to upgrade DataGate during your AVR 5.0 upgrade. If that's the case, we recommend upgrading DataGate before you upgrade AVR 5.0. AVR 5.0 connects successfully to DG 16/17 allowing you to stage the upgrades.
An important upgrade
This is a very important upgrade for AVR 5.0 customers. We don't provide tech support for retired products. It's very important for you to upgrade to AVR 5.1 or 5.2 as soon as possible to have tech support available.
One more thing... while this is an important upgrade, you don't have to do this upgrade tomorrow. You can do it with a planned, rational approach. That AVR 5.0 is retired doesn't mean its wheels come off tomorrow. That said, an upgrade by the end of year would be prudent.
