IBM Power Systems Elastic CoD features available for ordering through Entitled Systems Support website, enabling processor and memory ordering in minutes and provisioning in seconds (for US only)
Overview
New Elastic Capacity on Demand (ECoD) features are available for ordering through the IBM Entitled Systems Support website in the United States.
With ECoD and the new Entitled Systems Support website implementation, you will be able to purchase ECoD processor and memory days through the web that temporarily activate processors and memory in full-day increments. With this new implementation, you can add temporary capacity (processors and memory) whenever needed in a manner of minutes without any intervention with IBM.
You will be able to purchase ECoD processor and memory days through the web and then apply them to any IBM POWER8® -based, capacity on demand-enabled server that is within your own enterprise. In addition, with this new implementation, you will be able to purchase a pool of ECoD capacity and share the capacity across all the POWER8 -based, COD-enabled systems within your enterprise. After ECoD processor or memory days are purchased through the Entitled Systems Support website, you can begin ordering and downloading ECoD activation codes from the same site.
These new ECoD features, used in conjunction with the Entitled Systems Support website implementation, offer the following benefits:
- A friendly way to order ECoD processor and memory days through the web and get billed at the end of the quarter
- The ability to order in bulk under one order and allocate the processors and memory to multiple systems in the same country
- No requirements for the sales rep registration form
- No need to report usage monthly
- The ability to order in minutes and provision in seconds.
With this new ECoD/Entitled Systems Support website implementation capability, system administrators can download ECoD activation codes, directly from the web, for a specific number of processor or gigabyte memory days and enter that activation code directly into an interface at the Hardware Management Console (HMC) to support the activation of resources. A monitor that resides on the server logs the usage activity and notifies you when you are running low on ECoD processor and memory days, at which time you can purchase additional ECoD processor and memory days. Before using temporary capacity on your server, install the required firmware service pack.
This new digital channel offering represents a major step in IBM's strategy to make it easier for you to acquire capacity when you need it and only pay for capacity when you use it. You will be able to efficiently discover and purchase ECoD features to meet your needs.
For additional support on how to administer these new features, see the My Entitled Systems Support website. At that website, you can also view, download, email, and generate new feature on demand codes.
Key prerequisites
The machine type/models must have the latest service pack release installed. See the Software requirements section for details.

Overview
The new IBM Emperor II is a highly engineered system designed to thoroughly protect data, the new business currency, with speed and agility at scale.
The world is in the middle of a transformation which is having a profound effect on us as individuals, on how businesses are run, and on how business is transacted. In this ever-more-digital world, the new currency is data and the insights that data can provide. It is a world that requires ultimate trust in the data that businesses collect, create, and store.
As a natural evolution of the digital transformation, the complexity of the data value chain has also expanded. The expectations of consumers, suppliers, and business partners have grown. They demand security, transparency, and greater value in every interaction and transaction as this new currency is exchanged. Securing data from both internal and external threats is of utmost importance, yet only a portion of data is adequately protected today. Failure to secure such data has both financial and reputational consequences.
Digital experiences are no longer hosted entirely on premises through data centers but are delivered in combination with hybrid clouds. This is by design as businesses must be open and connected to drive innovation at speed. They must accelerate development and delivery of secure, scalable services to address new opportunities and challenges before a competitor steals the advantage.
IBM Emperor II is designed to provide highly securable data for businesses looking to thrive in a data-centric economy.

IBM Data Science Experience Local V1.1 turns data into business insights
At a glance
IBM Data Science Experience Local V1.1 provides end-to-end management of the machine learning workflow through a suite of tools and capabilities that enables data scientists to accelerate their productivity and keeps models deployed across the enterprise current. Data Science Experience Local is available on premises and offers the following benefits:
- Integrates the most popular open source data science tools (for example, Jupyter Notebooks, Spark, RStudio, and more) in a single location and enables access to common data and framework, eliminating the problem of siloed tools.
- Scales data scientist productivity through collaboration, enabling data scientists to tap into the expertise of their peers and to collaborate over specific multiple projects.
- Offers optimization capabilities by embedding optimization engines such as IBM CPaLEX and IBM CP Optimizer with Python API as a modeling interface. For solving, a model limitation is applied for 1,000 variables and 1,000 constraints of model size, but an incremental purchase of unlimited solving engines removes limitations.
- Allows data scientists to develop models with a wide range of algorithms that can be trained and improved with machine learning services. Models can be rapidly deployed to production and continuously monitored by data scientists in a single model management dashboard.
Overview
Interest in and adoption of data science and machine learning is booming with a profusion of new tools, new algorithms, new libraries, and new data sets such as Twitter and more. Data-driven companies such as Uber and Airbnb have shown the rest of the world the impact world-class data science can have on business results.
The challenge companies have to extract business insights from their data is exacerbated by a continued shortage of skilled data scientists. That skills limitation, coupled with the fact that many existing tools are siloed, requiring different skill sets, has made it increasingly difficult for companies to derive valuable insights that could drive decision-making and business results.
Data Science Experience Local is designed by data scientists to increase their productivity. It solves many of the current challenges, enabling companies to quickly ramp up the impact of data science to get more out of their data from existing resources. Cross-functional teams can now collaborate on the same machine learning project, and the resulting models can be easily deployed, evaluated, and monitored over time.
Data Science Experience Local enables companies to drive business results with insights from their data, while keeping the data secure. Data Science Experience Local offers the following key capabilities:
- Provide a dashboard for administrators to monitor services. Administrators do not need to be familiar with Kubernetes and Docker technologies because the dashboard provides an overall view of cluster and service health and hides the complexities of the underlying deployments. Administrators can easily view resource consumption and the health and performance of each service. Administrators can also run utilities to automatically troubleshoot the cluster and collect logs. The dashboard features include:
- View of global resource consumption of CPU, memory, and storage
- Ability to drill down to individual services
- Ability to view currently running services and historical consumption statistics
- View of current and past alerts and access to service logs
- Provide a convenient user management system to securely manage user access. Administrators can integrate existing LDAP systems or use built-in authentication methods.
- Provide high availability, load balancing, and fail-over for added security and stability.
- Gain access to ready-to-use, preintegrated, and managed popular open source tools such as Jupyter Notebooks, RStudio, and Spark in a single location. Data scientists no longer have to expend valuable resources to manage the many versions of open source tools.
- Provide access to common data through shared object storage.
- Collaborate on shared workspaces (projects), enabling new data scientists to improve their data science skills and their knowledge of proprietary company data by sharing with and learning from more experienced data scientists.
- Offer an environment where data scientists can improve their skills by tapping into content such as reference notebooks, tutorials, sample data, and more.
- Provide optimization capabilities by integrating CPLEX® and CP Optimization engines to solve mathematical programming, constraint programming, and constraint-based scheduling programs. For example, users are able to formulate their optimization models in Python and solve those Python models with either of the two engines. For solving, a model limitation is applied for 1,000 variables and 1,000 constraints of model size, but an incremental purchase of unlimited solving engines removes limitations.
- Provide the ability to connect to existing remote Spark through Livy REST APIs.
- Provide complete end-to-end management of the machine learning workflow. From model creation and training to deployment and continuous model performance monitoring, DSX Local provides an integrated environment that enables rapid model deployment for a fast path to insights-driven decision-making.
With Data Science Experience Local, companies can accelerate the expertise and productivity of their data science teams, shortening their transition to data-driven enterprises.
Key prerequisites
Data Science Experience Local can be deployed in three or nine physical or virtual server configurations on a variety of Linux operating systems. For details, see the Software requirements and Hardware requirements sections.
