TechTalk: Has That Report Printed?

Are your users wasting time checking the printer or the related output queue to see if their reports have printed? In the past, I've written programs to send a message to the user as soon as the report is generated. Recently, however, I stumbled upon a faster, more accurate, and less costly solution. Simply change the user's profile to include USROPT(*PRTMSG). You can do that with either the Change User Profile (CHGUSRPRF) or the Change Profile (CHGPRF) command.

The change makes the system send a message to the owner of the report. The message indicates that printing is either complete or held by the printer writer. If another user holds the spooled file, however, no message is sent.
