IBM announced that it would preload the Zend Technologies Web stack, including Zend Core, Zend Framework, and Zend Toolkit with all future IBM i software shipments beginning Friday, Feb. 6. The move is expected to make it easier for users to start running PHP applications on the IBM i because they no longer will have to download the software from the Zend Web site.

While the term "preload" means that the software is shipped with the hardware, it will not be "preinstalled," and users will still have to load it onto their computers. The move by IBM to include it along with shipped IBM i operating equipment gives a big boost to PHP enthusiasts--including Zend Technologies--and is intended to help the more conservative i customers get started running PHP Web applications on the IBM midrange platform.

Zend Core provides a type of runtime environment on IBM i for PHP applications, and Zend Framework is described by Zend as a "collection of best practices," written in PHP, to help facilitate PHP applications running on the i platform and enhance their overall security.

Zend Core still will be licensed and supported by Zend Technologies, and the preloaded software with IBM i 5.4 and 6.1 comes with Zend's Web-based "Silver Support," product updates, and hot fixes from Zend. Additional PHP software and support can be ordered through IBM for fulfillment by Zend. These include the following:

  • Gold and Platinum support from Zend for Zend Core
  • Zend Studio, an integrated development environment, with Gold and Platinum support from Zend
  • Zend Platform, offering advanced monitoring, optimization, the 5250 Bridge, and the Java Bridge with Silver, Gold, and Platinum support from Zend.
