IBM InfoSphere BigInsights Enterprise Edition V3.0 will continue to deliver enterprise Hadoop capabilities with easy-to-use administration and management capabilities, rich developer tools, and powerful analytic functions.
InfoSphere BigInsights V3.0 will be available in three editions:
- Quick Start Edition
- Standard Edition
- Enterprise Edition
BigInsight Quick Start Edition
This is a no-charge, non-production downloadable version and will contain the features of the Enterprise Edition with the exception of high availability, General Parallel File System (GPFS), software bundles, and accelerators. Tutorials and videos will be available for education.
BigInsight Standard Edition
This lower-priced edition is designed for organizations that are looking to get started with the core Hadoop components. It comes with Big SQL and BigSheets, two key features that set BigInsights Standard Edition apart from other current Hadoop distributions, along with development tools, a management console, and cluster management tools.
BigInsights Enterprise Edition
This edition comes with the enterprise features that enable all roles within an organization to collaboratively influence Hadoop and big data. It will deliver all of the BigInsights Standard Edition features plus search and data exploration capabilities. It will include limited use licenses to InfoSphere Streams, Watson Explorer, and IBM Cognos bundles, the enterprise-grade General Parallel File System File Placement Optimizer (GPFS-FPO) file system option, Adaptive MapReduce, and deep-text analytics capabilities that enable the extraction of insights and knowledge from unstructured text stored in Hadoop. This proven technology can then be leveraged by the included Machine Data Analytics and Social Data Analytics capabilities of the BigInsights Enterprise Edition.
Targeted new capabilities in InfoSphere BigInsights V3.0
Big SQL V3.0, will bring a full-function SQL query capability, that is accompanied by security and extreme performance, to data that is stored in Hadoop.
Big SQL, first introduced in BigInsights V2.1 as a new SQL interface for BigInsights, allows users to leverage existing SQL skills and immediately apply them in a big data environment. Big SQL provides a complete SQL ecosystem with a SQL engine that links to business analytics, data lifecycle management and more.
This new version of Big SQL V3.0 will build on that which was introduced in Version 2.1 and provide application transparency and agility by enabling richer SQL standard support. Its comprehensive SQL 2011 language support included stored procedures, user-defined functions, broad data type support, and much more.
Big SQL V3.0 will deliver industry-leading, SQL processing performance over Hadoop data with a true distributed data processing engine that sits on top of Hadoop. This will allow users to run SQL on Hadoop in the same way it would for Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS), without having to change their applications. In addition to a powerful, SQL query rewrite and Optimizer capability, Big SQL V3.0 will include scale-out parallelism performance to hundred of nodes. It is also optimized for concurrent user throughput performance in addition to single stream.
Big SQL V3.0 will foster application portability and integration across Business Analytics tools. This is due to the richness of the SQL that will allow SQL to run on Hadoop the same way it would for RDBMS. It is optimized for IBM software while it offers enhanced support for third-party software.
Big SQL V3.0 will also deliver enterprise-level security. Users can be authenticated though the operating system, through a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server or create custom, authentication plug-ins. From there, users can be granted access privileges to the data, even down to a row and column level for fine-grained security. Because access control is transparent, users are not aware of rows and columns that do not have permission to see. Additionally, users can define audit policies and track user activities and configure the Transport Layer Security to protect and secure data as it moves through the network.
Big SQL V3.0 will support federation to many data sources, including but not limited to DB2 Linux, UNIX, and Windows, PureData System for Analytics, PureData System for Operational Analytics, Teradata, and Oracle. This will allow users to send distributed requests to multiple data sources within a single, SQL statement. To end users and client applications, data sources will appear as a single, collective group in the Big SQL V3.0 server. The Big SQL V3.0 server will contain a system catalog that stores information about the data that it can access. This catalog will contain entries that identify data sources and their characteristics. Big SQL V3.0 will consult the information stored in the catalog and the data source wrapper to determine the best plan for processing SQL statements.
Big SQL 3.0 will be available in InfoSphere BigInsights V3.0 and will run on POWER Linux (Red Hat) and Intel x64 Linux (both Red Hat and SUSE distributions).
