In his keynote address at the recent Pulse 2008 conference in Orlando, speaking before more than 4,000 IBM clients, Business Partners and employees, IBM Tivoli Software General Manager Al Zollar detailed how, much like the assembly line and automation transformed the automobile and telecommunications industries over the past century, IT operations are ripe for industrialization.

The industrialization of IT operations includes a process of continuous innovation that uses automation and best practices to link together the phases of designing, delivering, and managing IT systems. Zollar told the audience that this will lower the cost of technology management and open doors to new business opportunities for organizations competing in the global economy.

"While IT organizations have automated some functions, the industrialization of IT operations is still in its early stages," said Zollar. "IBM is in a unique position to provide the software, hardware, and services to help clients move beyond siloed management to industrialized operations."

As new applications cause a surge in the growth of workloads run in data centers, IT infrastructure and operations executives are investing in service management to deliver quality services to their business and customers at lower costs.

IBM, the worldwide leader in the IT operations management software market for the past six years, according to Gartner, Inc., is helping clients develop service management strategies that enable them to deliver better quality services to customers, greater efficiencies, cost savings and productivity.

At the Pulse conference, IBM announced:

·       New software for a greener world--IBM introduced an action plan and new software to help businesses reap the benefits of technology that delivers increased efficiency while being friendly to the environment. IBM "Software for a Greener World" includes new products that track energy consumption in the data center and enable IT managers to adjust power usage to reduce costs and control carbon emissions. The new offerings are Tivoli Monitoring, IBM Maximo Facility Management and IBM Compliance Warehouse for Legal Control. IBM Active Energy Manager, introduced last year, has also been enhanced.

·       New energy optimization software--As part of the action plan created to help businesses become green, IBM is debuting software that will help customers address the growing need to maximize energy efficiency and reduce costs associated with power and cooling while also providing them with tools to maintain service levels and performance. The new IBM Tivoli Monitoring software provides energy management information that enables the optimization of data center and facility assets.

·       New software for growing mid-market businesses--IBM launched new software designed to help mid-market customers manage their businesses more effectively and a new Tivoli Deployment Accreditation initiative that recognizes business partners who have built skills around Tivoli's broad suite of offerings to address the needs of these customers. Part of its ongoing commitment to this market, IBM will expand Tivoli software offerings for this market, and assist growing mid-sized businesses as they choose solutions to better manage their network infrastructures.

·       New service management software--IBM announced several new software releases, services, and tools to help organizations make the most of their technology infrastructure investments. These new and enhanced offerings support clients' efforts to deliver improved quality IT services at lower costs and aligned with business goals. The offerings include new Healthcheck services for service management; IBM Tivoli Unified Process, a new unified foundation for service desk and process automation; IBM Tivoli System Automation Application Manager; IBM Tivoli Composite Application Manager; IBM Event Management and Monitoring services; and IBM Tivoli Service Management Center for System z.

IBM also said it will soon announce new security software and the next evolution of its industry-leading asset management software.

·       New Maximo Asset Management software--IBM is announcing the availability of its enterprise asset management product, Maximo Asset Management. The new version of the software includes linear management functionality that is particularly relevant for industries that need to manage the unique attributes of linear assets.

·       Alcatel-Lucent Selects Tivoli Identity Manage--IBM will soon announce details on Alcatel-Lucent's selection of IBM Tivoli identity management software to help manage user identities of its employees, contractors, suppliers, resellers and other business partners.

·       New Federated Identity Management software--IBM will issue information on the new release of IBM Tivoli Federated Identity Manager software, which helps enable a company's separate business divisions to deploy secure software applications using open standards and a wide range of security credentials without needing to embed complex security logic into each application.

During Pulse 2008, IBM also presented customers with five new "Entry Points" to make it easier to get started with Service Management. These entry points address top customer issues with a series of documented project solutions that achieve significant business benefits upon completion.
