Profound Logic Software has announced the release of its newest on-the-fly modernization tool, Genie. The new product provides the System i community with an intuitive and codeless method to modernize all of its legacy green-screens.

100 percent Browser-based

Genie is 100 percent browser-based and produces standard HTML with no need for PC Clients, ActiveX Controls, or Applets. Once it is installed, you can modernize all of your RPG, CL, Cobol, menu, or i5/OS system screens. This is done by using a collection of files called a "skin," which allows Genie to turn legacy green-screens into a much more interactive, user-friendly, browser-based screen that can help improve the usability of an application and shorten the learning curve for new users.

Customization with Genie

The screens produced with Genie can be easily personalized from both the browser and System i level with simple scripting commands that are provided from Profound Logic's library. This allows the user to customize screens with graphs and charts, dynamic images, dropdowns, tabs, calendars, SOA, AJAX, as well as apply other customizations.

Genie incorporates an automation script called Gscript. This simple scripting language provides an easy way to automate System i tasks like integrating individual screens into an existing Web application without having to login or navigate through the application's menu. Profound Logic also offers RPGsp, a robust Integrated Development Environment, which can significantly simplify Genie development.

Part of a Complete Solution

When modernizing any System i application, there is usually no clear-cut approach. It is quite common that the right solution is a combination of different approaches, whether that be screen-scraping, automated conversion, or complete redevelopment. You can choose several different tools to find the right combination, but typically these disparate tools will have compatibility issues.

Profound Logic Software has built a solution to eliminate these compatibility issues. Genie offers integration features that allow it to co-exist with other Web application approaches. As a result, Genie can be seamlessly integrated with the rest of the Profound Logic suite of software tools. The company notes that Genie was built entirely with RPGsp, Profound Logic's proven flagship product

Genie provides an on-the-fly modernization tool that is easy to use and can be customized, while providing the flexibility to integrate with the rest of the suite as needed to further develop applications, according to the company.
