Eliminating Writer Messages

If you have a printer that you want to print all form types without operator intervention, such as a laser printer, use the Add Reply List Entry (ADDRPYLE) command to add two system reply entries for each writer. The system will automatically answer forms changes and alignment messages for the writer specified.

 ADDRPYLE SEQNBR(XXX) MSGID(CPA3394) CMPDTA(ZZZZZZ 1) RPY(G) ADDRPYLE SEQNBR(YYY) MSGID(CPA4002) CMPDTA(ZZZZZZ 1) RPY(I)

XXX and YYY are determined by using WRKRPYLE and finding unused numbers. ZZZZZZ is the writer name.

By using the Display Message (DSPMSGD) command, you can further customize these reply entries for your particular needs.

Disk Information Reports

Two commands can help you keep control of the disk usage on your system. One is called Retrieve Disk Information (RTVDSKINF) and the other is Print Disk Information (PRTDSKINF). These two new commands, added with V2R2M0, allow you to collect information about disk usage on the system and produce reports that help you to analyze the data that's collected.

To start the process, submit the RTVDSKINF command to batch. After this data collection job finishes, you can use the PRTDSKINF command to print the disk information that has been gathered. You can choose from five different reports: Library, Folder, Owner, Object and System information. All these reports, by default, present information about the object types you have selected, sorted in descending order by size. Most allow optional sorting orders.

Consider using these new commands in conjunction with automatic cleanup to keep your DASD lean and fit.

Free Job Scheduler

To easily get started using the new job scheduler which is part of OS/400 as of V2R2M0, just enter the Work with Job Schedule Entries (WRKJOBSCDE) command. The resulting screen, shown below, has all of the familiar functions such as F6 to add, Option 2 to change, and so forth. It's so intuitive that you probably won't even need to read a manual. Now you can offload your resource-intensive jobs to nighttime and weekend environments so they won't impact system performance during peak hours.

Print Screen Options

There are several options for the way the output is created when the Print key is pressed. When the system is shipped, the default value for the QPRTKEYFMT system value is *PRTHDR, which specifies that header information is provided when the Print key is pressed. By changing this system value to *PRTBDR, you can request that border information be printed instead. If you specify *PRTALL, then both header and border information are included with the output from the Print key. The QPRTKEYFMT system value effects the print key output for all jobs on the system. If you want to change the Print key output for your job only, then use the Change Job (CHGJOB) command and specify an option on the PRTKEYFMT parameter. This parameter has all of the same options as the system value.
