Programmers often use the record and playback functions of workstations-such as the IBM 3180-to reduce the keystrokes required for repetitious tasks. The playback values for a single key often change many times over the life of a project. But these types of workstations make it easy to change the playback value.

RUMBA users have record and playback capabilities as well, but changing the playback value can be cumbersome. Here's a tip on how to dynamically change a RUMBA QuickStep button to emulate the record and playback functions of 3180- style workstations. Start by creating a QuickStep pad. This first set of instructions only needs to be done once:

1. Bring up the macro script editor by selecting the Editor option on the Macro pull-down menu.

2. Enter a key name value you want displayed on the QuickStep button, then enter some text for the macro by double clicking the Type command.

3. Save the macro by selecting the Save As option on the File pull-down menu, entering a file name, and selecting the OK button.

4. Exit the macro script editor by selecting Exit on the File pull-down menu.

5. Bring up the QuickStep editor by selecting QuickStep on the Macro pull-down menu.

6. Select the macro file created in step 3 from the Files list box, then select a button on the QuickStep pad.

7. Save the QuickStep pad by selecting Save As on the File menu, entering a file name, and selecting the OK button.

8. Select List On Menu from the File pull-down menu.

9. Exit the QuickStep editor by selecting Exit on the File pull-down menu.

10.Select the QuickStep file you just created from the Macro pull-down menu.

You should now have a QuickStep pad displayed on your screen. Use the right mouse button to change the value of a macro assigned to a button on the QuickStep pad. This will take you directly into the macro script editor. Change the macro as desired, save the changes, and exit the macro script editor. The QuickStep button is now available with your new changes in effect.
