Slim Down QSNADS

If you have set up a substantial SNADS distribution network, you have probably configured a number of different distribution queues on your system. Even if a queue is rarely used, the sender job for the queue is always active in subsystem QSNADS.

With OS/400 V2R3, you can avoid these extra jobs in the system by configuring the SNADS distribution queues so that sender jobs are active only when they have distributions to send.

You can create these manual-start queues in two ways. The first technique uses the Configure Distribution Services (CFGDSTSRV) command. When creating or changing a distribution queue with this command, blank out the values in the Send Depth field for both normal and high priority. The Send Time parameter (both From/To and Force) should also be blank.

In the second method, you add a distribution queue using the Add Distribution Queue (ADDDSTQ) command, specifying *MANUAL in the Send Depth parameter for both normal and high priority. Do not enter any time values into the Send Time parameter (From/To and Force).

After configuring the distribution queues and, if necessary, restarting QSNADS, you can send distributions in one of two ways:

1. Use option 2 (Send queue) on the Work with Distribution Queue (WRKDSTQ) display. 2. Use the Send Distribution Queue (SNDDSTQ) command.
