Q. I am very interested in frame relay on the AS/400. Has anyone experienced any of the following scenarios?

Scenario 1: AS/400 to AS/400 using frame relay and the high-speed adapters on the AS400s.

Scenario 2: AS/400 on a LAN to an AS/400 on another remote LAN using a bridge or router to connect the two LANs by way of frame relay. (Does Route-Xpander/2 work well?) This could be an Ethernet or token-ring LAN.

Scenario 3: Same as scenario 2 but with PCs on one LAN using PC Support to access the AS/400 and Novell to access PCs on the other LAN either with or without NetWare for SAA.

A. Scenario 1 (AS/400 to AS/400) can be achieved any number of ways. All you have to do is configure network interface descriptions and a matching set of lines on both ends. The feature number of the high-speed adapter you need to use is 2666.

Scenario 2 (AS/400 through a router or bridge to a LAN) is possible by configuring a line on the AS/400 that is the same as the LAN on the other side of the router or bridge. For example, if you have token-ring on the other side of the router or bridge, you would configure a token-ring line on the AS/400 side as well. Of course, the router or bridge must support the bridging aspects defined under RFC 1490 for frame relay. The AS/400 has been tested with the RouteXpander/2 and this combination does work.

The AS/400 does not support scenario 3 (the routing or bridging of Novell IPX data over frame relay).
