Zmanda, a leader in open-source backup and recovery software, has announced the release of a new version of its flagship product, Amanda Enterprise. With expanded application support and disaster recovery options for Microsoft Windows databases and applications, this latest version provides a complete heterogeneous open source backup and recovery solution available, according to the company.
Using Amanda Enterprise, system administrators can now backup multiple Windows, Linux, Solaris, and Mac OS X clients to a single master backup server running on Linux or Solaris. The installation and configuration process has also been simplified to make it easier than ever to get up-and-running.
With this latest version of Amanda Enterprise, online backup support for popular Windows databases and applications has been extended to include Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange, and Oracle. By protecting the important Windows System State, including Active Directory, Amanda Enterprise provides fast system restoration and bare-metal recovery to dissimilar hardware and virtual environments, effectively protecting both user data and operating environment. Amanda Enterprise utilizes Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to ensure reliability during hot backups so that administrators can backup user files without impacting data access by users and applications. Usability enhancements were also made to allow custom reporting and native Windows restore to Amanda's already robust intelligent scheduler and rapid point-and-click restore features.
"Amanda Enterprise is the only open source backup and recovery solution on the market that supports business critical applications using open source, open formats, and native tools for Windows," said Dmitri Joukovski, vice president of product management, Zmanda. "By leveraging VSS, this enhanced version of Amanda Enterprise allows organizations to reliably and effectively backup Windows files, databases and applications without disrupting the productivity of their users."
Amanda Enterprise is an enhanced and supported version of the world's most popular open source backup and recovery software. Amanda Enterprise allows users to easily and affordably backup, archive, and recover servers, workstations, desktops and business-critical applications across a network. The backup data and archives can be stored on disks, tape, optical devices or online storage services such as Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3). Additionally, Amanda is the only backup and recovery solution certified by the Department of Homeland Security as being free of security defects.
According to IDC, the open source software market is projected to grow 26 percent annually to reach $5.8 billion by 2011. The same report cites the principle drivers for commercial open source software adoption include: customer choice and leverage with proprietary software vendors; venture capital backing for open source solutions; more comfort with subscription business models; and increased interest in open source software from large enterprises organizations. Targeted at mid-level and enterprise customers, Amanda Enterprise 2.6.4 will be available for download by Aug. 8th through Zmanda's online store at a starting price of $20 per Windows desktop and $100 per server protected.
