Company will announce a fee-based extended service offering at a future date.

IBM has set September 30, 2013 as the date it plans to withdraw support for i5/OS V5R4, giving users a year and a half to convert their programs and upgrade to IBM i 6.1 or 7.1.

The company said it will offer an extended support option for customers who "need more time" than the 20 months they will have until support for the older version of the OS is suspended.

Along with the operating system itself, a number of applications running on V5R4 also will have support withdrawn, the company announced. It's not clear if the fee-based OS support option will include an extension of support on the affected applications, but it would seem that some consideration on application support would be necessary for those moving to the fee-based support.
