ACOM Solutions: 25 Years and Still Going Strong

ACOM Solutions is celebrating its 25th year in business, according to Patrick McMahon, company president and CEO.

ACOM's core solution suite enables companies to save money and transition to a paperless environment by eliminating preprinted checks and business forms, using instead stored electronic form templates that merge with data to create complete electronic documents that can be laser printed and distributed--if necessary--and stored electronically.

"Currently, our solutions are in use at well over 4,000 customers in midsize enterprises and large corporate departments, in both IBM midrange (iSeries-System i) and Microsoft Windows environments," McMahon said. "With a highly creative management group and a staff of energetic and committed employees, our solution suite continues to evolve in power and functionality. It has been recognized repeatedly with a variety of industry awards."

Founder Ed Kennedy established ACOM as a lessor of computing equipment in 1983 following a successful early career in sales and marketing management with several leading technology companies.

"Leasing was a popular alternative for companies newly involved with data processing," Kennedy says. "For us, it represented an excellent business model, since our standard three-year lease covered our investment and from there on, it was almost pure profit.  But when Hewlett Packard launched the first laser printer, we recognized that the combination of desktop computing, laser printing and software technology presented a vast new field of opportunity. We have not been disappointed."

ACOM's first foray under the new corporate vision was in MICR laser payment processing, which allowed companies to save money, increase efficiency and establish greater security by dispensing with preprinted forms and printing complete checks on blank security check stock. This formed a basis for the evolution of payment technology as we know it today: paper-based and electronic payment solutions existing side-by-side and executing in a single operation.

The breakthrough in payment technology was followed by solutions for electronically generating company business documents and labels and a little later with solutions for electronic data interchange (EDI-XML) and for consolidation of corporate files into a single document repository.

Establishing the Healthcare Business Division three years ago with a focus on chiropractic, ACOM created an advanced software suite for electronic medical records and business office management, adding chiropractic consulting services to the mix as well. Earlier this year, the division also launched a comprehensive medical billing service. The division is now also addressing the multi-discipline healthcare practice field energetically and successfully.

While ACOM has seen its electronic payment/document concept progress from that of a promising innovation in 1983 to the status of a virtual necessity in today's fiscally pressured, efficiency-obsessed corporate world, there is still a great deal of work to be done, Kennedy and McMahon agree.

"The climate for businesses continues to evolve, with each change bringing new pressures and challenges," McMahon said. "It is our mission to be watchful, anticipate the challenges and to be there with solutions when our customers need them.  To do this, we have a talented and dedicated group of people who share the commitment to provide and support our software solutions and services."
