Updated curriculum to focus on modernization and latest capabilities of IBM i and RPG.

System i Developer has announced that its eighth RPG & DB2 Summit conference, set for Oct. 12-14, 2010, will return to a favorite venue in Minneapolis with a significantly updated curriculum themed “i can…can you?” The new curriculum advances the Summit’s goals of explaining new capabilities of the IBM i: teaching modern development skills, tools and methods and inspiring developers to embrace modernization projects that compel their companies to keep mission-critical applications and data on the IBM i platform.

“A major problem facing IBM i developers is that proponents of other platforms are quick to say, ‘We can do that” when it comes to meeting new business demands,” explains System i Developer partner Jon Paris. “Traditional RPGers know that the i is rock solid, but they don’t necessarily have the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to build modern UIs, Web applications, and data-centric solutions. All of the tools are there. But individuals have to make the commitment to learn the skills that will keep both them and the i relevant. That’s the ‘i can … can you?’ challenge.”

Paris and System i Developer partners Paul Tuohy, Susan Gantner and Skip Marchesani will help developers and database engineers hone critical skills at the RPG & DB2 Summit in October. Over one-third of the sessions on the preliminary agenda are new or significantly updated this year. Together with guest speakers Scott Klement, Mike Cain, Kent Milligan, Barbara Morris, Bruce Vining and Aaron Bartell, the group will explore several areas in depth, including modernization techniques, PHP, SQL, database performance, updates for RPG/DB2/CL in IBM i 7.1 and RPG Open Access. As a whole, RPG & DB2 Summit sessions train attendees on practical, use-it-today tips and techniques used for speeding development, improving application flexibility, modernizing program architecture and implementing new types of user interfaces.

“There’s been a lot of gnashing of teeth over the decline of the IBM i, yet the platform is more flexible, efficient, and secure than ever,” expounds Paris. “If we want the i to survive, then we darned well better learn to use the tools it gives us so we can prove to management that it’s still the best platform in the world.”

In addition to the three-day conference, four optional half-day Headstart Seminars on Monday, Oct. 11, provide an in-depth focus on Web Services, PHP, HTML/Javascript/CSS for RPG developers, and leveraging SQL for data-centric applications. Attendees can add seminars to their conference registration at $215 for one seminar, or $295 for two.

Renowned for its value proposition, the Summit offers a discounted early registration rate of $1095 ($995 for alumni) through July 30. Standard registration is $1395 ($1195 for alumni.) Registration includes breakfast and lunch each conference day, plus a welcome banquet on the first night.

Returning to the Sofitel in Minneapolis, System i Developer again negotiated a special room package for attendees at just $99/night plus taxes. “Last fall, Summit attendees gave the Sofitel rave reviews,” says Skip Marchesani. “The food was incredible, and we had excellent accommodations with complimentary Internet access, parking, and shuttle service from the airport. It’s one of the best hotel values we’ve seen in all of our years speaking at conferences.”

The RPG & DB2 Summit is sponsored by leading media organizations, IBM Systems Magazine, System iNetwork and MC Press Online.
