System i Developer today announces the debut of a new DB2 for i track entitled Design It, Build It, Secure It, Tune It at the RPG & DB2 Summit, March 22-24, 2016 in Dallas, TX.
Comprised of 14 75-minute sessions over 3 days, the redesigned track takes a holistic approach to teaching modern IBM i database best practices. It examines in detail the latest techniques used in real-world database projects and culminates with a full lifecycle demonstration of how programmers can employ those techniques to solve a typical business problem.
Mike Cain, team leader of IBM’s DB2 for i Center of Excellence, explains why the holistic approach creates a more robust learning experience.
“We treat the individual technical topics as part of a complete process,” he says. “In the final presentations, all of the features and functions we learn are woven into a realistic business problem/solution scenario. The practical demonstration, the putting into action all of the concepts and best practices, really shows the audience a clear path forward in terms of data-centric development technique.”
The database process begins with data modeling, a discipline largely overlooked by IBM i shops, according to Cain. “Most businesses depend on conceptual, logical and physical models to serve as the blueprint for communicating the database architecture and design. Although the data modeling process is universal across platforms, most IBM i shops have yet to discover its power.”
The DB2 track will also cover topics such as thinking in sets as opposed to records; the elements of set-at-a-time processing; the SQL components of DDL, DML and PSM and related objects such as tables, views, indexes, queries, procedures; built-in security features such as Row and Column Access Control (RCAC); and techniques for increasing efficiency, performance and scalability.
While the track is designed as a single, cohesive DB2 for i roadmap, registrants can also chose a curriculum that mixes individual DB2 for i sessions with sessions from other tracks.
Online registration for the RPG & DB2 Summit is now open on the System i Developer website.
