Companion piece to Favorite RSE Keyboard Shortcuts now available to public
System i Developer, the consortium of top educators on IBM i development technologies and producers of the RPG & DB2 Summit conference, today announces that partner Susan Gantner, recognized expert and popular trainer on Remote System Explorer (RSE), has released her RSE Quick Start Guide for download from the System i Developer website.Previously used primarily with her students as part of her RSE course materials, Gantner made the decision to release the Guide as a free download to the general public to encourage the adoption of RSE as the development tool of choice by all IBM i developers.
Remote System Explorer is the core of IBM’s graphical development environments for IBM i, now packaged in Rational Developer for Power Systems (RDP) and earlier part of the WDSC. RSE is meant to replace the 5250 code editor known as SEU.
“Nearly every day I talk with programmers who have not yet upgraded to RSE, primarily because they fear the hurdles of getting started with a new tool,” explains Gantner. "But once you make the transition, RSE is so much faster that you can quickly make up the time spent on learning it. And then you’ll continue to find new ways to speed up application delivery. I liked working in SEU, but RSE simply blows it away.”
The RSE Quick Start Guide expedites a developer’s transition from SEU to RSE. In addition to stepping readers through the process of installing and configuring RSE, Gantner shows them how to become productive faster by using RSE’s powerful source editor, exploring programs with the Outline View, and finding/fixing compile time errors faster than ever without ever opening a compile listing.
Gantner’s classic companion piece, her Favorite RSE Keyboard Shortcuts tips sheet, has been publicly available from the System i Developer website since 2007.
Both documents will be used as support materials for Gantner’s RSE sessions at the upcoming RPG & DB2 Summit, October 23-25 at the Sofitel in Minneapolis, MN. The Summit also features courses on RPG IV, DB2 for i, embedded SQL, SQL tuning, PHP, Web enablement technologies, Web services, mobile application development and additional modern development tools.
Gantner’s RSE Quick Start Guide and Favorite RSE Keyboard Shortcuts tips sheet are available for free download at www.systemideveloper.com/downloads.html.
