Downers Grove, Ill. Programmers and developers who have used Synon for years are quickly learning how LANSA products can help them maintain and extend existing core systems with a short learning curve. They are investing in the future by choosing Visual LANSA and LANSA for the Web to create new applications to increase ROI.
Taiga Forest Products, Canada’s largest independent distributor and processor of lumber and other building materials, wanted to enhance their core systems with Web and Windows graphical applications while retaining compatibility with its large number of Synon applications and 3GL programs already in production. By choosing Visual LANSA Frameworks and Mygreat Remodeler (from Mygreat Technologies, a LANSA business partner), Taiga can now integrate LANSA-built applications into existing systems and do future development in Visual LANSA.
Bryan Lindquist, IT manager at Taiga Forest Products, said, “Thousands of hours of development work in defining files, fields, business rules and help text were preserved by migrating our Synon model into LANSA. New development using Visual LANSA Frameworks has been accelerated because we started with a completely populated LANSA Repository that we felt familiar with. We continue to reap the rewards of our Synon investment with each new LANSA application and enhancement.”
John Wiley & Sons, Inc., is a well-known global publisher of print and electronic products headquartered in New York. This company developed it’s AS/400 core systems using Synon/2E (now Cool:2E), but efforts to develop a Web-based order entry and inquiry system went awry until it turned to LANSA for the Web. Since implementing the online system, customers experience better service, bookstore staff may track shipments, and the shopping cart ensures that orders are filled and shipped without delay. Internal staff using the Synon/2E interface and customers us a LANSA for the Web interface to the same system.
Customers are also finding that their Synon skills are applicable to LANSA. Stephen Foster, Associate Director of Systems Development, commented, “A colleague and I attended a LANSA training course. There are similarities between Synon and LANSA and the learning curve was not too steep. When we came back, we had a customer inquiry function up and running within two weeks.”
