File Access
File Access 6.0 Is Now Available!
Powerful SQL Comands Built In.
-- New JOIN command allows you to display, updtate, journal multiple files at the same time. Supports left, right and exception joins.
-- New SELECT command allows you to enter SQL selection criteria within any file. For example, SELECT UPPER(COMPNAME) like '%OAS_S%'
-- New ORDER command allows you to create indexes on the fly, even on joined files. For example, ORDER BY CUSTMAST.CSTNBR, ORDFILE.ORDATE DESC
--New EXPORT command allows you to export the results of any JOIN, SELECT, ORDER to a new file or user defined program.
-- New GROUP command allows you to open up to 16 files at once.
-- IBM V6 Compatible
File Access includes all the functionality one would expect from a high-quality file editor. A *SELECT value in the File Access command parameter brings up a File Open prompt to allow the user to search for a file by name through the library list or to list all files within a library.
Database records can be added, changed, deleted, displayed, or duplicated in character or hex, single or multiple-record format mode. The field sequence can be changed and fields protected or omitted. Fields can even be derived by defining the starting position, length, and data type. Edit codes are retrieved automatically and can be overridden or added. File Access displays either the column heading or the field names, and switches between 80 and 132 columns on the display.
The default data view (which the user can change) displays a single column of fields, with data on the right and wither field text or field names on the left. With the function keys, users can switch to two or three columns or data, and change to multiple-record mode to view up to 22 records at a time.
File Access uses IBM-standard function keys to scroll right and left and roll forward or backward. A control field allows users to perform a variety of functions:
• Jump to the top or bottom of the file.
• Skip to a specific relative record number.
• Move forward or backward n number of records.
• Toggle between relative record number and key.
• Alternate between add, change, delete, duplicate, and display modes.
• Display data in character or hex.
• Move to a specific field, or move over a specific number of fields.
• Print the current record.
• Change between upper- and lowercase input.
• Display the database relations screen showing all logical files.
• Display data by fields or by record.
File Access's fast, powerful search functions allows users to scan and replace and even to perform global deletes using standard operators (including CT, for contains). Users can also perform AND or OR operations on up to twelve fields, or search across the whole record and look for records containing decimal data errors. The results can be printed or written to file, or a subset of the records can be displayed in single or multiple record mode.
Advanced Features
File Access comes with a host of advanced features. With its macro feature, users can easily set up a controlled file-editing environment. A File Access macro definition can be stored in any library after specifying the file to edit, optionally selecting and sequencing the fields, and altering any other user preferences. The user can then run the macro to get a customized view of the file, but they won't have access to the setting.
File Access will also use the sort sequence and selection criteria from file opened with an Open Query File (OPNQRYF) command. THis is extremely useful in determining the sequence of records and in debugging complex OPNQRYF statements. Another file handy offset feature, journal files can be displayed in their proper fields.
File Access also has a *PRV option that returns to the exact screen and setup of the user's last File Access session, and all selections remain when changing to a new file with the same format definition. File Access can output the results of a search to a printer or a file, and it even creates the DDS. Additional information (such as the file and field definitions, database relations, or member list) can be displayed or printed as well. A split screen feature displays two different files at the same time.
File Access is compatible with OS/400 security level 40. It also provides internal security, including field level. File Access/400 supports data, time, and timestamp fields and interactive Data Definition Utility (IDDU) and Distributed Data Management (DDM) files.
