New Generation Software, Inc. (NGS) has announced the general availability of its new IQ Client, a Windows "smart-client" query development module in the NGS business intelligence product family for System i users.

IQ Client features a graphical point-and-click, drag-and-drop query and report writing environment where users work with DB2 for i5/OS data without sacrificing the benefits of native, batch query processing and security. The unique design of this software enables a user to work with or without a live System i or Internet connection. This enables IQ Client to combine the ease of use and familiarity of the Windows user interface with the strengths of the integrated NGS-IQ business intelligence environment and System i.

IQ Client lets users develop everything from quick ad-hoc queries to production reports and immediately save and upload the queries to IQ Server, NGS-IQ's native query engine on the System i, for storage and processing. Once saved on the System i, queries created with IQ Client can be revised and run from NGS-IQ's Web browser and 5250 user interfaces. No query translation or conversion is required.

By deploying IQ Client, a company's database and business knowledge can be extended to non-technical users as they download queries developed by othersùwith file joins already pre-setùand work comfortably with these queries in a Windows interface that they typically prefer. IQ Client supports extended functionality including simple and conditionally calculated fields; multifile joins; runtime prompts for selection criteria and/or calculations; date arithmetic; report break summaries and calculations, rankings, running totals, averages and percentages; extensive formatting; e-mail and FTP delivery, and more.

Users will appreciate IQ Client's one-click connection to Qport Access, the client module of NGS-IQ that provides direct output to the following: Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word; NGS-IQ's multi-dimensional OLAP module; display; print; output defined on the server, e.g. dynamic Web NGS dashboards, PDF, HTML, DB2 UDB (summary or detail), XML, CSV, and TXT. Users are only allowed to copy the structure of files or NGS-IQ query objects they are authorized to access. Security is enforced on the System i through i5/OS's object authority and IQ SeQure, NGS-IQ's optional security management module which offers user restrictions by file, field, record, and output.

"As a long-time AS/400 developer and advocate for native green screens, I was frankly surprised to discover that I now prefer developing queries in IQ Client. Its' design and ease of use truly speeds deployment," said John W. O'Sullivan, NGS' vice president of Information Technology. "And its' offline development capability means users can be productive whenever and wherever they need to be."
