New Generation Software, Inc. (NGS) has added a new module, IQ Connexion, to its IBM i-based NGS-IQ business intelligence and enterprise reporting solution to enable IBM i customers to extract and work with data stored in Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and IBM DB2 databases on other platforms. With the new IQ Connexion module, NGS-IQ users can develop queries, reports, dashboards, spreadsheets, OLAP models, Web reports, and other forms of output from data in all of these popular databases while working on the IBM i.

The IQ Connexion program initiates a connection to the remote database at query execution time. It then performs an SQL request to extract the requested data, and finally transforms it into DB2 on the IBM i. Security is carefully maintained as the profile of the user making the request must have been assigned the authority to run the IQ Connexion program, connect to and extract data from, the remote data source and database, and run the NGS-IQ query.

"More and more IBM i customers run business application software on multiple servers, operating systems, and databases. With this ability to reach out to virtually any important database in the enterprise, a customer can use the IBM i and NGS-IQ as the hub for all its reporting and analysis needs." says Bernard Gough, CEO and president of NGS.

The combination of NGS-IQ and IQ Connexion can also dramatically simplify cross-platform data integration and the maintenance of a DB2-based data warehouse on the IBM i. NGS anticipates customers will quickly discover how the solution eases extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) tasks in cross-platform environments.

IQ Connexion is one of two remote database transfer functions available to NGS-IQ customers. The other function, known as "Transfer to Host", lets authorized users create DB2 files from data stored in Microsoft Access tables. Using Access as the middleware makes sense in many situations because it can import just about any file format, including Excel spreadsheets, CSV, TXT, and others, and it is already installed on millions of authorized PC's. Many customers use this function to upload price changes, budgets, mailing lists, customer credit data, and other modest datasets as needed.
