Although there have already been plenty of concerns about how AI as a technology will cause seismic changes in numerous fields, OpenAI’s recent release of ChatGPT-4 has pushed many observers to a premature tipping point of existential panic.

Since the late 1960s, science fiction thrillers have gleefully anticipated the day when inventing a tool as clever as AI would come back to bite us. HAL 9000, Skynet, and similar silicon-based villains have all along seemed destined to usher in the fall of our species as soon as humans got stupid enough to make computers that are smart enough. Suddenly this spring, ChatGPT-4’s release seems to have become the “red sky at morning” of which sailors of digital seas must take warning. With apologies to Hunter S. Thompson, a review of the bidding may be in order.
Next in our series on Artificial Intelligence fundamentals, we examine the workhorse of deep learning – Neural networks.

Neural networks are the workhorses of deep learning (DL). Modeled loosely after the neuronal structure of the cerebral cortex in the human brain, neural networks are computing systems that learn to perform tasks by analyzing examples. For example, in image recognition, a neural network can learn to identify images that contain cats by analyzing images that have been manually labeled as "cat" or "not cat" and automatically generating identifying characteristics such as fur, tails, whiskers, and pointed ears that can then be used to identify cats in other images. The concept of neural networks was inspired by the way neurons in the human brain function together to understand inputs from the five senses (touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste). And, while neural networks may seem…
Because the Information Technology (IT) sector is all about computer hardware, software, and data, there is a relatively important role artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) can play in this domain. Some areas where AI, ML, and DL can be used to improve the IT (or computer services) industry include:
